Action Jackson (1988)

Action Jackson is the kind of late-’80s action-comedy that knows exactly what it is: a loud, swaggering good time powered by Carl Weathers’ irresistible screen presence and a hero with both fists and brains. Director Craig R. Baxley stages the mayhem with crisp, muscular panache, while Craig T. Nelson makes a deliciously smug villain you’ll love to hate, giving the whole Detroit power-game vibe a sharp edge. Vanity brings real spark and vulnerability, keeping the film from being just a parade of explosions and one-liners. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s severe violence, some nudity, and drug content—but if you’re on the fence and craving a confident, high-octane throwback with personality, this one hits hard and goes down easy.

Action Jackson is clearly trying to be a slick, big-loud ’80s cop romp: a charismatic tough guy, a corrupt industrial villain, quips, chases, and a lot of explosions. The problem is it often feels like two movies fighting each other—goofy comedy beats slammed up against genuinely nasty violence and drug material—so the tone can come off noisy and oddly mean rather than fun. The plot also lurches from set piece to set piece with a “just go with it” script, and even Carl Weathers’ natural presence isn’t always enough to make the character feel like a fully earned action-star showcase. If you love retro, over-the-top action and don’t mind messy storytelling, there’s pulpy enjoyment here (and Craig T. Nelson makes a solid villain), but if you want coherent stakes or consistent humor, this one may test your patience.
