RoboCop (1987)

RoboCop is that rare action movie that fires on every cylinder: a blisteringly efficient sci-fi thriller that’s also a razor-edged satire of corporate power, media noise, and the idea of “public safety” as a product. Paul Verhoeven stages the mayhem with muscular clarity and wicked humor, while Peter Weller gives the metal suit an unexpectedly human soul, making the film hit harder than its premise suggests. The effects and production design still crackle with tactile ingenuity, and the script is so lean and smart that even the loudest set pieces feel like they’re saying something. It is extremely violent and often grim, so it’s not for the squeamish—but if you can handle the intensity, you’ll find a darkly funny, strangely moving classic that earns its legend.

RoboCop is trying to be two things at once: a slick, crowd-pleasing action thriller and a nasty satire about corporate greed and a society that treats people like spare parts. It succeeds on craft—tight pacing, sharp world-building, and Peter Weller’s oddly human performance under all that metal—but it’s also unapologetically brutal, with violence that’s meant to shock, linger, and sometimes even make you laugh in disbelief.
