Prick Up Your Ears (1987)

Prick Up Your Ears is one of those rare biographical dramas that feels alive on the tongue—wickedly funny, bruisingly intimate, and constantly alert to the way love can be both a refuge and a pressure cooker. Stephen Frears directs with a supple, unshowy confidence, letting Alan Bennett’s razor-edged script glide from backstage comedy to emotional dread without ever feeling forced, while Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina turn a partnership into a duet of attraction, ambition, dependence, and quiet terror. Vanessa Redgrave, as the formidable agent Peggy Ramsay, anchors the film with worldly intelligence, giving the story a shrewd frame without draining it of heat. It’s not a cozy watch—sexuality is frank and the mood darkens as it goes—but if you want a drama that’s as witty as it is devastating, this one earns its reputation.

Prick Up Your Ears is aiming for a stylish, adult portrait of Joe Orton’s rise and the slow rot of a relationship warped by ambition, jealousy, and the era’s hostility toward gay men. The problem is that Stephen Frears keeps it at a cool, observational distance, so the tragedy can feel more like a well-mounted case study than something that grabs you by the throat, with a somber tone that occasionally drifts into moralizing. If you want a passionate, emotionally immersive romance or a sharp, consistently funny Orton tribute, this may leave you admiring it more than feeling it. Still, Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina are terrific, and the film has a literate, period-specific bite that will work best if you’re in the mood for character-driven gloom rather than catharsis.
