What people think about Overboard
Overboard is the kind of ’80s romantic comedy that wins you over on sheer movie-star electricity: Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell don’t just flirt, they spar, soften, and glow with the easy chemistry of people who genuinely enjoy sharing the screen. Garry Marshall keeps the tone breezy and sunlit—part slapstick, part fairy tale—while letting the story find real warmth in the way a spoiled heiress and a scrappy working dad rub each other raw and then, inevitably, smooth out the edges. It’s a little broad and the premise asks you to go with it, but if you can accept that heightened, sitcom-like setup, you’ll be rewarded with a charming, surprisingly sweet crowd-pleaser that still knows how to land a laugh and a swoon. Not for everyone if you’re allergic to older rom-com ethics or salty language, but for many it’s comfort food with genuine sparkle.
Overboard is trying to be a breezy, old-school screwball romance where two people from opposite worlds knock each other into shape, and Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s natural charm does a lot of heavy lifting. The problem is the central premise—revenge via deception—hasn’t aged gracefully, and if you’re sensitive to consent issues or “mean-spirited” setups played for laughs, you may spend more time wincing than swooning. The humor is broad, the characters are pretty one-note, and the story is extremely predictable, so don’t expect sharp writing or a genuinely earned emotional turn. If you can treat it as a glossy, slightly cruel 80s time capsule with a few solid physical-comedy bits, you’ll get by; if you want modern rom-com warmth or believable character growth, this probably isn’t for you.
