The Monster Squad (1987)

What makes The Monster Squad special is how it turns the Universal Monsters into the stuff of a kid’s wildest, most sincere imagination—part spooky sleepover story, part scrappy backyard adventure, all propelled by the kind of earnest ‘80s energy movies don’t bottle anymore. Fred Dekker treats Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, and company with real affection, so the film feels like a love letter to classic horror even as it cracks wise and keeps the pace brisk and crowd-pleasing. The vibe is Halloween-night fun: spooky but not soul-crushing, funny without deflating the stakes, and unexpectedly warm when it counts. It’s not for everyone—some jokes are very much of their era and the PG-13 edges show—but if you’ve ever wanted The Goonies to pick a fight with Dracula, this is the one to invite in.
