Malone (1987)
Erstwhile C.I.A. assassin Richard Malone hopes for a tranquil retirement in the placid Pacific Northwest, but what he gets is a rumble with a right-wing extremist plotting a secret revolution.
What people think about Malone
Malone is one of those lean, late-’80s thrillers that sneaks up on you: it looks like a familiar “man wants peace, trouble finds him” setup, then tightens into a fatalistic, noir-tinged standoff where every quiet moment feels like the calm before something ugly. Burt Reynolds is in terrific, weathered form—less wisecracking star, more wounded professional—anchoring the film with a grounded toughness that makes the action hit harder than the budget suggests. Harley Cokeliss gives the Pacific Northwest a chilly, backroad menace, and Cliff Robertson’s polished villainy adds a credible sense of rot beneath small-town respectability. It’s not for viewers who want light escapism—the violence can be blunt and the mood is grim—but if you’re on the fence and crave a watchable, well-shaped throwback thriller with real bite, this one earns its time.
Malone is trying to be a gritty “retired killer dragged back in” thriller with a timely menace, pitting Burt Reynolds’ weary charisma against a small-town conspiracy and a slick extremist villain. The problem is it plays far more routine than urgent: the plot hits familiar beats, the pacing sags between bursts of violence, and it rarely delivers the sharp one-liners or swagger you’d hope for from Reynolds at his best. There are a few solid moments—some rough-and-ready action and a dependable bad-guy performance from Cliff Robertson—but the tension never quite builds into something memorable. If you’re after a lean, suspenseful 80s actioner with real momentum, this may feel like a mild, workmanlike detour rather than a hidden gem.
