Malone (1987)

Malone is one of those lean, late-’80s thrillers that sneaks up on you: it looks like a familiar “man wants peace, trouble finds him” setup, then tightens into a fatalistic, noir-tinged standoff where every quiet moment feels like the calm before something ugly. Burt Reynolds is in terrific, weathered form—less wisecracking star, more wounded professional—anchoring the film with a grounded toughness that makes the action hit harder than the budget suggests. Harley Cokeliss gives the Pacific Northwest a chilly, backroad menace, and Cliff Robertson’s polished villainy adds a credible sense of rot beneath small-town respectability.
