Lethal Weapon (1987)

Lethal Weapon is the rare action film that fires on every cylinder because it cares as much about the men behind the badges as it does the bullets flying past them. Richard Donner turns Los Angeles into a pressure cooker where sharp humor and real ache coexist, and the magic is watching Mel Gibson’s volatile Riggs and Danny Glover’s grounded Murtaugh collide, then slowly click into one of cinema’s great partnerships. The thrills are muscular and cleanly staged, but they land harder because the movie keeps returning to friendship, family, and the small human moments that make the danger matter. It’s not for viewers who want their action bloodless or their comedy gentle, but if you’re on the fence, this is the template that made the buddy-cop genre feel alive.

Lethal Weapon is trying to fuse hard-edged cop thriller stakes with buddy-comedy warmth, and when it clicks, the Gibson–Glover chemistry and Richard Donner’s clean, punchy action direction make it easy to see why it became a template. The downside is that the plot can feel like it’s running on attitude more than logic, with coincidences and leaps that ask you not to think too hard. The pacing also wobbles, especially as it drifts into longer chase-and-showdown stretches that can feel drawn out rather than escalating. If you want a tightly plotted crime story, this may irritate you; if you’re here for charismatic leads, quotable banter, and tough-guy 80s energy, it still delivers.
