Less Than Zero (1987)
A college freshman returns to Los Angeles for Christmas at his ex-girlfriend's request, but discovers that his former best friend has an out-of-control drug habit.
What people think about Less Than Zero
Less Than Zero is the kind of ’80s drama that slips a knife under the neon glow—stylish on the surface, bruisingly human underneath—and it earns its power through performance rather than sensationalism. Robert Downey Jr. delivers a raw, unsettlingly honest turn that makes the film feel less like a cautionary tale and more like watching someone you care about disappear in real time, while the rest of the cast keeps the emotional stakes sharp and believable. The Los Angeles backdrop is all glossy lights and hollow parties, and the soundtrack pulses with that era’s cool, giving the movie a seductive vibe that only deepens the dread. It’s not a feel-good watch, but if you want a poignant, visually striking character-driven drama that lingers after the credits, this one hits hard.
Less Than Zero is clearly aiming for a glossy, cautionary L.A. nightmare about privilege, addiction, and the way friendships rot when no one wants to say the hard thing. The problem is it often feels smoothed down and emotionally thin, like the studio wanted the vibe of darkness without committing to the messiness that would make it sting. If you’re expecting the sharper, more unsettling bite of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, this can come off as superficial and oddly toothless, even when the subject matter is brutal. That said, the cast brings enough sincerity and 80s atmosphere to keep it watchable if you’re in the mood for a stylish, melancholy drama rather than a truly confrontational one.
