Less Than Zero (1987)

Less Than Zero is clearly aiming for a glossy, cautionary L.A. nightmare about privilege, addiction, and the way friendships rot when no one wants to say the hard thing. The problem is it often feels smoothed down and emotionally thin, like the studio wanted the vibe of darkness without committing to the messiness that would make it sting. If you’re expecting the sharper, more unsettling bite of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, this can come off as superficial and oddly toothless, even when the subject matter is brutal.
