La Bamba (1987)
Los Angeles teenager Ritchie Valens becomes an overnight rock 'n' roll success in 1958, thanks to a love ballad called "Donna" that he wrote for his girlfriend. But as his star rises, Valens has conflicts with his jealous brother, Bob, and becomes haunted by a recurring nightmare of a plane crash just as he begins his first national tour alongside Buddy Holly.
What people think about La Bamba
La Bamba is special because it doesn’t treat Ritchie Valens like a legend carved in stone—it meets him as a kid with a huge heart, a restless gift, and a family that both grounds and complicates him. Lou Diamond Phillips gives a performance full of hunger and tenderness, and Luis Valdez surrounds the rise-to-fame beats with the lived-in warmth of home: loud, loving, messy, and real. The movie’s vibe is buoyant and romantic when the music hits, then quietly haunting in the background, as if success always comes with an echo of what it might cost. It’s a sincere, old-fashioned crowd-pleaser at its core, though the family conflict and a few intense moments mean it may hit harder than you expect.
La Bamba is clearly aiming to be an uplifting, culturally proud rise-to-fame story that doubles as a heartfelt tragedy, and it mostly succeeds on sheer sincerity and great music moments. The problem is it’s a very traditional, paint-by-numbers biopic: you can often see the big beats coming, and the movie doesn’t dig as deeply as it could into Ritchie’s inner life or the industry around him. The family drama, especially with the brother, can feel blunt and repetitive rather than nuanced, and the direction keeps things a bit “TV-movie” grounded when you might want more spark and curiosity. Still, Lou Diamond Phillips is likable, the performances have warmth, and if you want an accessible crowd-pleaser with memorable songs (and you’re ready for emotionally heavy crash material), it’ll do the job—just don’t expect a daring or layered character study.
