Ironweed (1987)

Ironweed is the kind of adult drama that feels less like a story being told than a life being quietly witnessed—tough, tender, and haunted by the things we carry when we think no one is watching. Héctor Babenco frames Depression-era Albany with a bruised lyricism, and in the center Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep create a relationship that’s ragged around the edges yet unmistakably alive, two souls trying to keep their dignity while the world keeps taking it away. The film’s Halloween atmosphere gives it an eerie, reflective vibe, but its real power comes from its deep compassion for people society prefers to step over.
