The Hidden (1987)
When average, law-abiding citizens suddenly turn to a life of hedonistic behavior and violent crime, Detective Tom Beck is tasked with helping young FBI agent Lloyd Gallagher determine the cause.
What people think about The Hidden
The Hidden is one of those lean, mean ’80s genre hybrids that feels like it was engineered to keep your pulse up: a sci-fi hook, a cop-thriller engine, and horror nastiness all snapping together with surprising elegance. Jack Sholder directs with slick confidence, turning a string of seemingly random crimes into a propulsive mystery, while Kyle MacLachlan brings an off-kilter calm that plays beautifully against Michael Nouri’s hard-boiled intensity. The vibe is grimy, adrenalized, and darkly fun in that midnight-movie way—more momentum than mythology, more attitude than speeches—and it rarely gives you time to breathe. It is very much an R-rated ride with bloody, occasionally icky violence, but if you like your science fiction served hot with car chases, shootouts, and a genuinely clever premise, this is a minor classic that still rips.
The Hidden wants to be a slick, high-concept body-hopping thriller with a buddy-cop edge, and for a good stretch it actually delivers pulpy momentum and a nasty little streak. The problem is that once the mystery is basically solved, it leans into a fairly conventional sci-fi finish that can feel like it’s ticking boxes rather than escalating into something truly clever. If you’re allergic to ’80s genre logic, R-rated splatter, and a plot that prioritizes chase-and-shoot energy over deep character work, this may wear out its welcome. Still, Kyle MacLachlan’s oddball intensity and the film’s committed, grimy tone make it a solid pick if you want fast, trashy fun more than a fresh ending.
