What people think about Hector
Hector is the kind of comedy that wins you over not with punchlines, but with a big, open heart and a gentle sense of mischief—an old-school Flemish crowd-pleaser that still feels disarmingly fresh. It takes a premise that could be sad and spins it into something warmly funny and quietly touching, letting Hector’s childlike worldview turn everyday work, family friction, and small-town routines into opportunities for unexpected invention and joy. The vibe is sunny and sincere, with a visual charm and an underdog spirit that makes you root for everyone it pulls into its orbit. If you prefer sharper, more cynical humor, this may feel too naive—but if you’re in the mood for a classic that leaves you smiling, Hector earns its reputation.
Hector is aiming for broad, feel-good comedy built around an overgrown orphan whose childlike innocence “fixes” everyone around him, with a side of underdog sports and a dash of romance. The problem is it plays like a very Belgian, very 80s farce: lots of mugging, exaggerated situations, and jokes that lean on silliness and easy sentiment rather than sharp writing. If you’re allergic to populist crowd-pleasers that slide into banality and cartoonish absurdity, this will test your patience. But if you enjoy gentle, old-fashioned slapstick and don’t mind a thin plot as long as the mood stays upbeat, it can still be an easy, harmless watch.
