Fatal Beauty (1987)
Detective Rita Rizzoli is accustomed to donning costumes and going undercover to nail crooks. But she'll be required to use all of her get-ups and more when a major cocaine ring is suspected of turning out a potent new strain of the drug, called "Fatal Beauty." With the help of her partner and a former bodyguard for a local cartel, Rita will do whatever it takes to find out who's dealing Fatal Beauty and stop them.
What people think about Fatal Beauty
Fatal Beauty is the kind of scrappy, streetwise action-comedy that wins you over on pure personality, anchored by Whoopi Goldberg in a performance that’s both fiercely funny and unexpectedly powerful. It moves with the snap of an undercover cop movie but keeps a lively sense of play as Rita Rizzoli slips between disguises and danger, letting the comedy sharpen the tension instead of deflating it. The chemistry and grit get an extra boost from Ruben Blades, who brings real weight to the chaos and makes the partnership feel earned. If you want a polished, prestige crime thriller this isn’t that, but if you’re on the fence about an ’80s cop ride with bite, heart, and a few scenes that genuinely land, this one’s easy to recommend.
Fatal Beauty wants to be a slick, undercover cop romp that lets Whoopi Goldberg cut loose with tough-girl swagger and quick comedy while taking down a flashy new drug ring. The problem is it often plays like a loud, chaotic grab-bag of shootouts and one-liners, with a tone that swings from jokey to unsettlingly violent without much finesse. If you’re expecting sharp buddy-cop chemistry or a clever mystery, you may find it brainless and a bit like it’s chasing the Beverly Hills Cop vibe without the same charm. Still, Goldberg’s commitment and a few energetic set pieces can make it watchable if you’re in the mood for rough-edged, ’80s action that doesn’t ask you to think too hard.
