Creepshow 2 (1987)

Creepshow 2 is a love letter to the kind of horror that feels like flipping through a lurid comic at midnight—bright, nasty, and wickedly fun, with a playful wraparound that keeps the whole thing pulsing like a campfire dare. Because it’s an anthology, you get three distinct flavors of fright: a grim little revenge yarn, a lean creature feature that squeezes maximum dread out of a simple setup (the raft segment is justifiably beloved), and a darkly comic nightmare that turns guilt into an inescapable punchline. Michael Gornick leans into pulpy pacing and practical, gooey gross-outs without losing the mischievous sense of humor that makes the scares go down easy. If you want prestige horror or subtlety, this isn’t that—but if you’re in the mood for brisk, comic-book macabre with a mean grin, it’s a terrific time capsule worth the ride.

Creepshow 2 is clearly trying to bottle that EC Comics vibe again: quick, nasty morality tales with a wink, splashed in comic-book colors and capped by a simple wraparound. The problem is it’s a lopsided anthology—one segment delivers genuinely sticky, memorable creature horror, while the others lean on repetition and thin characters, so the whole thing can feel like you’re waiting for it to get good again. The effects and gore have a grubby charm and there are a few fun performances, but the pacing and predictability make it a weaker, cheaper-feeling follow-up to the first film. If you want tight storytelling or consistent laughs, this may test your patience; if you’re happy with ’80s schlock, mean-spirited comeuppance, and a couple of standout scares, it’s an easy late-night watch.
