Wisdom (1986)

Wisdom is the kind of scrappy, big-hearted 1980s crime drama that aims for mythic Americana—an outlaw romance with a bruised conscience—and it’s hard not to be pulled along by its earnest anger at a system that won’t let a young man outrun one bad mistake. Emilio Estevez directs with a straightforward, road-movie momentum, giving the bank-robbery set pieces a clean, propulsive energy while keeping the focus on the couple at the center, with Demi Moore bringing a grounded edge that makes the ride feel less like fantasy and more like desperation. The vibe nods to Bonnie and Clyde and Robin Hood without pretending to be as elegant or as iconic, but it’s well-made, intermittently thrilling, and often surprisingly sincere about what it wants to say.
