Project A-Ko (1986)
Earth. The not too distant future. A city is miraculously reborn just sixteen years after being completely destroyed by a giant meteor. At the prestigious Graviton High School for Girls, two new students are introduced. A-ko and her ditzy sidekick, C-ko.
What people think about Project A-Ko
Project A-Ko is the kind of anime that feels like a joyful dare: take the everyday rhythms of high school, pour in superhero strength, rivalrous obsession, and crashing sci‑fi chaos, then animate it all with the breathless confidence of a studio showing off. Katsuhiko Nishijima keeps the tone buoyant and mischievous, so the action lands like physical comedy—robots, explosions, and escalating set pieces staged with crisp timing and delightfully overbuilt mechanical designs. It’s also a rare ‘80s OVA where the English dub has real snap, helping the banter and bravado play like a Saturday-morning cartoon that accidentally got a blockbuster budget. Fair warning: it’s unapologetically of its era with frequent fanservice and a knowingly cheeky gaze, but if you can roll with that, you’ll get a fast, funny, surprisingly elegant riot that earns its cult-classic reputation.
Project A-Ko is trying to be a hyperactive love letter to ’80s anime excess: schoolgirl rivalry, mecha mayhem, and sci‑fi nonsense all mashed together into a nonstop gag-fight. When it works, it’s got real energy, some inventive action beats, and a playful, self-aware tone that rewards viewers who enjoy chaotic parody more than coherent storytelling. But if you want a plot that actually settles down, characters with emotional depth, or comedy that isn’t built on repetition and sheer volume, this can feel like a loud sketch stretched to feature length. Also, the frequent fanservice (upskirt shots and nudity) is very much of its era, and for many viewers it’ll be the dealbreaker that makes the whole thing feel more sleazy than silly.
