Opposing Force (1986)
A group of elite soldiers, including one woman, sign up for the ultimate training mission. The group parachutes onto a remote island, where their objective is to reach the safety zone before the "opposing force" captures them. Everything does not go as expected, and the training mission turns into the real thing.
What people think about Opposing Force
Opposing Force has that lean, high-concept ’80s punch: drop a squad of elite trainees on a remote island, turn the exercise into a pressure-cooker, and let the suspense tighten with every mile they run. It’s an effective, entertaining action-thriller that keeps moving, trading glossy heroics for a grim, hunted vibe where trust frays and survival feels earned. The cast gives the material real bite, with Anthony Zerbe especially memorable as a menace who seems to enjoy the rules until he decides they don’t apply. It’s not for everyone—its back half can veer into rougher, more gratuitous territory—but if you like your action compact, tense, and just cynical enough to feel timely, this one delivers.
Opposing Force is clearly aiming for a lean, survival-style action thriller where a “training exercise” turns into a deadly hunt, and for a while that premise has decent tension and a pulpy, mid-’80s grit. The problem is it can’t keep its story disciplined: the plot gets increasingly muddled, the violence starts feeling more gratuitous than suspenseful, and the back half slides into noisy action that’s less engaging than it should be. The ending, in particular, tends to leave viewers feeling shortchanged rather than satisfied. If you’re in the mood for cheap-and-cheerful mercenary mayhem and don’t mind rough edges, you might tolerate it, but if you want coherent stakes and a payoff that lands, this probably isn’t your island.
