Murphy's Law (1986)

Lee Thompson keeps the momentum high, mixing hardboiled grit with a surprisingly nasty streak of humor, especially once Bronson’s battered cop is forced into an uneasy, bickering alliance with Kathleen Wilhoite’s gloriously foul-mouthed street survivor. The vibe is lurid and relentless—more late-night cable pulp than prestige crime drama—but it’s precisely that shameless, high-incident energy that makes it so watchable. If you want subtle character study, look elsewhere; if you want a tough, entertaining man-on-the-run ride where the punches land and the tension rarely lets up, this one delivers.

Murphy’s Law is trying to deliver a gritty, back-against-the-wall manhunt with Charles Bronson doing what he does best: stubborn toughness, blunt one-liners, and a no-nonsense march toward payback. The problem is the plot feels like it’s running on fumes—busy and occasionally convoluted, yet strangely flat emotionally—so even the “framed cop on the run” hook can start to feel routine rather than urgent. If you’re hoping for a tight thriller, clever twists, or characters with much shading beyond “hard” and “worse,” this probably isn’t your night.
