Lucas (1986)

Lucas is one of those rare teen movies that treats adolescence not as a joke to survive, but as a real emotional landscape where every glance and betrayal can feel life-sized. Corey Haim gives a disarmingly open performance as a brilliant, awkward kid trying to translate his huge inner life into a world that rewards confidence and punishes difference, and the film meets him with a tenderness that never turns condescending. David Seltzer keeps the tone gently funny and quietly aching, letting the romance and friendships unfold with the messy honesty of first love rather than the neatness of a formula. It does include bullying and some painful humiliation, so it’s not a purely cozy watch, but if you want a coming-of-age story that earns its heart and leaves you feeling oddly hopeful, this one lingers.

Lucas is clearly trying to be a tender, sympathetic coming-of-age story about first love, class divides, and the pain of not fitting in, and Corey Haim brings enough sincerity to make you root for him. The problem is it often leans hard into 80s teen-movie shorthand—bullies, jocks, the “nice kid” suffering nobly—so if you’re allergic to familiar beats and earnest sentimentality, you may find it manipulative rather than moving. It also softens some harsher realities with an upbeat, crowd-pleasing finish that can feel like the movie wants applause more than honesty. Still, if you want a gentle, old-school teen drama with a sweet streak and a few genuinely heartfelt moments, it does deliver that much.
