Legal Eagles (1986)
Assistant District Attorney Tom Logan is set for higher office, at least until he becomes involved with defence lawyer Laura Kelly and her unpredictable client Chelsea Deardon. It seems the least of Chelsea's crimes is the theft of a very valuable painting, but as the women persuade Logan to investigate further and to cut some official corners, a much more sinister scenario starts to emerge.
What people think about Legal Eagles
Legal Eagles is the kind of glossy, grown-up 80s entertainment that knows how to be breezy and smart at the same time, gliding from courtroom banter to art-world intrigue with Ivan Reitman’s polished touch. What really sells it is the star chemistry: Robert Redford’s ambitious DA has that old-movie ease, Debra Winger brings snap and warmth as the defense attorney who won’t let him stay comfortable, and Daryl Hannah adds an offbeat, unpredictable sparkle that keeps the whole thing pleasantly off-balance. The vibe is sophisticated and playful—more Manhattan cocktail comedy than gritty crime saga—with enough twists and danger to keep the plot humming without turning grim. It’s not for you if you demand airtight logic from every mystery beat, but if you want charm, style, and a light crime caper carried by irresistible performers, it’s an easy yes.
Legal Eagles is trying to be a slick, grown-up cocktail of courtroom banter, romantic sparks, and an art-world mystery, with Ivan Reitman aiming for breezy charm rather than hard-edged crime. The problem is it can feel like three different movies fighting for control: the tone lurches from cute comedy to thriller beats, and the plot gets busy enough that the “why should I care?” factor starts to creep in. Redford and Winger have enough star wattage to keep scenes watchable, and the Manhattan gloss plus art-fraud setup is a decent hook, but the script often feels scattered and oddly weightless for what it’s dealing with. If you want a tight legal comedy or a coherent mystery, this may test your patience; if you’re happy to coast on ’80s star chemistry and style, you’ll get more out of it.
