Half Moon Street (1986)

Half Moon Street is the kind of grown-up thriller-drama they don’t make much anymore: intelligent, sensual, and driven less by gunfire than by the charged, fascinating conversations between two people who can’t quite afford to trust each other. Sigourney Weaver is utterly commanding as a brilliant academic who refuses to be diminished, and Michael Caine meets her with a weary charm that turns their scenes into a duel of wit, need, and wary respect. The London atmosphere feels lived-in and slightly bruised, and the film’s political undercurrent gives the romance a dangerous edge without turning it into a lecture. It’s not for viewers who shy away from frank sexuality or a few jolts of violence, but if you want a smart, adult story where chemistry is the main special effect, it’s a surprisingly gripping watch.
