Gothic (1987)

Gothic is the rare horror film that feels like a delirious poem—Ken Russell turns the famous “ghost-story contest” at Lake Geneva into a feverish, candlelit carnival where desire, guilt, and imagination bleed into one another. It’s shot with intoxicating visual bravado: vivid lighting, restless camera movement, and practical effects that land less like jump scares and more like waking nightmares you can’t quite shake. Gabriel Byrne’s Lord Byron and Natasha Richardson’s Mary Shelley anchor the madness with real presence, so even when the film gets ghoulishly funny and frenzied, it never feels weightless. If you prefer tidy, logical horror, this may be too dreamlike and unhinged—but if you want a stylish, high-voltage descent into the birthplace of Gothic myth, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Ken Russell’s Gothic is trying to turn the famous “night that birthed Frankenstein” into a feverish, decadent nightmare about creativity, repression, and drugs blurring reality. The problem is it often plays less like a controlled descent into horror and more like a loud, messy barrage of shrieking, symbolism, and scenes that feel intentionally shocking but not especially scary. If you need coherent storytelling, natural dialogue, or horror that builds tension instead of going full theatrical hysteria, this will likely irritate you fast. Still, Gabriel Byrne brings a magnetic nastiness to Byron, and if you enjoy aggressively weird, arty 80s excess where taste is optional and mood is everything, you might find it oddly hypnotic.
