The Fugitives (1986)

Francis Veber builds a buoyant, perfectly timed chase out of misunderstandings and desperation, and the magic is watching Gérard Depardieu’s tough, trying-to-go-straight ex-con ricochet off Pierre Richard’s endearingly hopeless bungler in a partnership neither man asked for but both need. The film’s tone is light on its feet—more playful than edgy—yet it earns its tenderness through small human moments, especially around the idea of second chances and makeshift family.
