Deadly Friend (1986)

Deadly Friend is Wes Craven having mischievous fun with a killer premise: suburban teen heartbreak colliding with bright-eyed 1980s faith in computers, until the circuitry starts humming with something far darker. It’s stylish and slyly funny in that sardonic Craven way, letting you chuckle at the neighborhood rhythms one moment and then jolt you with the next, all while keeping a surprisingly poignant undercurrent about loneliness and the urge to “fix” what can’t be fixed. The movie plays like a mesmerizing time capsule of arcade-era optimism turned uncanny, with a pulpy, propulsive storytelling drive that makes its weirdness feel bold rather than random. The problem is the tone never fully settles—one minute it wants to be heartfelt and tragic, the next it lunges into splattery mayhem—so it can feel routine and oddly flat when it should be unsettling. The performances and pacing don’t consistently sell the emotional stakes, which makes the big horror beats land more as “well, that happened” than genuinely creepy.
