Band of the Hand (1986)

Band of the Hand is one of those scrappy, neon-lit ’80s curios that shouldn’t work as well as it does—and that’s exactly its charm: part tough-love survival tale, part Miami street-war fantasy, all soaked in a Miami Vice-adjacent sheen and a pulsing soundtrack that keeps the movie moving like a music video with bruises. Paul Michael Glaser leans into a heightened, comic-book vibe where the Everglades feel mythic, the city feels lawless, and watching a pack of feral kids get forged into something like a family becomes weirdly satisfying. Stephen Lang brings real gravity as the hard-edged mentor, grounding the film whenever it threatens to float away on pure attitude. It’s not for viewers allergic to camp, rough edges, or dated language, but if you’re on the fence and you miss when action movies swung for the fences with style, swagger, and a little bit of trashy poetry, this is a cult detour worth taking.

Band of the Hand wants to be a gritty 80s redemption story: troubled kids turned into a tight unit by a hard-edged mentor, then unleashed on Miami’s sleaze to “clean up” the streets. The problem is the movie can’t decide if it’s a serious crime drama or a loud, pulpy action fantasy, so the tone swings wildly and the vigilante turn feels more blunt than earned. Dialogue and character beats often land with a thud, and what’s meant to be tough can come off unintentionally funny if you’re not on its wavelength. Still, if you’re in the mood for neon-era B-movie energy, swamp survival training, and shootouts that don’t overthink themselves, you might find it enjoyably trashy rather than genuinely good.
