Asterix in Britain (1986)
One little ancient British village still holds out against the Roman invaders. Asterix and Obelix are invited to help. They must face fog, rain, warm beer and boiled boar with mint sauce, but they soon have Governor Encyclopaedius Britannicus's Romans declining and falling. Until a wild race for a barrel of magic potion lands them in the drink.
What people think about Asterix in Britain
Asterix in Britain is a spry, good-natured cartoon that turns culture clash into comedy gold, sending its indestructible Gaulish heroes into a land of fog, fussy manners, and culinary crimes against boar. The animation has that bright, storybook snap classic Asterix fans crave, and the film’s pacing keeps the gags coming—Romans get their comeuppance with a cheerfully inventive slapstick rhythm that never feels mean. Beneath the silliness, there’s a warm, family-friendly spirit about helping the underdog hold on to their identity, even when the empire looks unstoppable. If you prefer your comedy subtle or your adventure grounded, this might feel broad, but if you’re on the fence and want something charming, quick, and irresistibly playful, it’s an easy yes.
Asterix in Britain is clearly aiming for light, family-friendly fun by poking affectionate jokes at British stereotypes and delivering the usual Asterix-and-Obelix “outsmart the Romans” adventure. The problem is that it can feel like a string of small gags and detours rather than a story with real momentum, and the humor is more gentle and repetitive than laugh-out-loud. The animation and pacing are very much of their era, so if you’re expecting slick visuals or modern comedic timing, you may find it a bit plodding. Still, if you like cozy, low-stakes cartoon adventures and you already enjoy the Asterix vibe, it’s an easy watch; if you don’t, this one probably won’t convert you.
