Amazons (1986) is the kind of scrappy, myth-soaked throwback that wears its love for old-school sword-and-sandal adventure on its sleeve: bold warrior heroines, cursed magic, and a steady march from one perilous set-piece to the next. Alejandro Sessa keeps the momentum on battles, ambushes, and pulpy fantasy menace, creating an easy, escapist vibe that feels like a lost VHS rental from an era when “epic” meant earnest, uncomplicated fun. The film’s pleasures are straightforward—action, danger, rivalry, sorcery—served with enough gusto to keep you leaning in even when the edges show. Fair warning: it does include moderate nudity and some sexual-threat scenes typical of its subgenre, so it’s best for viewers who can take their retro fantasy rough around the corners.

Amazons (1986) is clearly trying to deliver a pulpy, dark-ages sword-and-sorcery romp with warrior women, prophecies, demons, and a big “chosen one” arc. The problem is it plays more like a bargain-bin fantasy scrapbook than an epic: the storytelling is thin, the pacing drifts, and the filmmaking can feel clunky enough to tip into unintentional comedy. It also leans heavily on nudity and sexual-threat scenes as “danger,” which will be a dealbreaker for plenty of viewers even if the gore stays relatively mild.
