Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)

Young Sherlock Holmes is a rare kind of prequel that doesn’t shrink a legend down to a gimmick—it opens him up, letting you watch brilliance and bravado form in real time, with the spark of a friendship that feels earned rather than manufactured. Barry Levinson gives the film a brisk, storybook momentum: part boarding-school camaraderie, part Victorian nightmare, where elegant London streets can suddenly tilt into eerie, hallucinatory menace, all delivered with effects that still have a playful, inventive kick. Nicholas Rowe and Alan Cox make Holmes and Watson engagingly human—smart, impulsive, and brave in that specifically teenage way—so the mystery and adventure land with real pulse instead of just cleverness. It does get intense for a family-friendly romp, with frightening visions and peril that edge into the dark, but if you’re in the mood for a stylish, charming thriller that treats wonder and danger as two sides of the same coin, this one is a terrific time.

Young Sherlock Holmes is clearly trying to be a lively “Holmes begins” adventure, mixing boarding-school camaraderie with spooky set pieces and a big, pulpy conspiracy. When it works, it’s charmingly cast, handsomely made, and the hallucination-driven scares are genuinely inventive for an ’80s family thriller. The catch is that the mystery itself is thinner than you’d hope: the plotting leans on spectacle and a melodramatic villain rather than the satisfying, step-by-step deduction that makes Holmes feel like Holmes. If you want a cozy, brainy whodunit, this may feel like flashy theme-park Sherlock; if you’re happy with a high-energy, slightly dark YA adventure wearing a deerstalker, you’ll probably have a good time.
