Warning Sign (1985)

Warning Sign is one of those lean, under-sung ’80s thrillers that turns a single, terrifying idea—quarantine with no good options—into two hours of mounting dread. Hal Barwood shoots the sterile corridors and locked doors like a maze designed to turn people against each other, and the film’s best trick is how it builds paranoia from procedure: alarms, protocols, and calm voices that can’t hide the panic underneath. Warning Sign wants to be a tense, ticking-clock biohazard thriller with a grounded, “this could happen” government-lab vibe, and the premise is solid enough to hook you early. The problem is it rarely cashes in on that setup: the story leans into predictable beats, the suspense doesn’t build as sharply as it should, and the ideas never get much deeper than “containment is hard and people panic.” Performances from Sam Waterston and Yaphet Kotto help give it some authority, and the makeup effects deliver a few nasty images, but the overall construction feels workmanlike rather than genuinely gripping.
