Trancers (1984)
Angel City trooper Jack Deth is sent back in time from 2247 to 1985 L.A. to inhabit the body of his ancestor. Deth's assignment is to find his archenemy, Whistler, who turns people into zombies, before the fiend is able to kill all the ancestors of the future's governing council.
What people think about Trancers
Trancers is the kind of scrappy, high-concept B-movie that feels like it was made on pure adrenaline: a future-cop noir dropped into sunburnt 1985 L.A., where the rules are loose and the pace never lets you get comfortable. Charles Band keeps it lean and punchy, mixing sci-fi gadgets, crime-movie grit, and a wicked little sense of humor that knows exactly how ridiculous the premise is—and plays it like a virtue. Tim Thomerson’s Jack Deth is all hardboiled swagger and deadpan charm, and the movie’s time-travel mechanics are delivered with just enough conviction to make the whole thing click. If you need glossy effects or deep philosophical weight, this isn’t your stop, but if you want a lively, witty cult ride that’s more fun than it has any right to be, Trancers earns its reputation the old-fashioned way: by entertaining you minute to minute.
Trancers wants to be a scrappy, neon-noir time-travel cop thriller, mixing future-tech gimmicks with 1985 L.A. sleaze and a pulpy “psychic zombie” villain. The problem is the script leans hard on ideas you’ve seen done better elsewhere, so the story often feels like a bargain-bin remix rather than something with its own identity. If you need tight plotting, sharp dialogue, or real sci-fi ambition, this will probably test your patience, because it coasts on concept more than execution. Still, Tim Thomerson’s deadpan charm and Helen Hunt’s presence give it a bit of life, and if you enjoy low-budget cult energy and don’t mind the rough edges, it can be a harmless, goofy ride.
