What people think about To Live and Die in L.A.
To Live and Die in L.A. is the kind of hard-edged, neon-scorched thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t loosen its grip, a William Friedkin fever dream where the city feels alive, dangerous, and morally compromised. It’s propelled by urgent pacing and a pulsing soundtrack, but what really sells it is the way the style serves the story: sharp cinematography, sweat-and-steel atmosphere, and performances that feel wired straight into the street. William Petersen plays his agent like a man sprinting past the line of legality, while Willem Dafoe turns the villain into something cooler, stranger, and more unsettling than a standard bad guy. Fair warning: it’s abrasive, violent, and proudly cynical, but if you want an ’80s crime film with real bite and one of the era’s most legendary car chases, this is a must.
To Live and Die in L.A. is clearly trying to be a sweaty, neon-noir pressure cooker about obsession and moral rot, with Friedkin pushing the idea that the “good guys” can be just as dangerous as the criminals. When it works, it’s lean, stylish, and genuinely tense, anchored by a terrific Willem Dafoe and a car chase that still has bite. But it can feel overcooked: the constant tough-guy obscenities, the ramped-up violence, and the anything-goes plotting sometimes play more like cheap adrenaline than believable police work, and the pacing can be oddly lurchy between set pieces. If you want a principled hero, emotional warmth, or realism, this will likely irritate you; if you can handle grimy 80s cynicism and aggressive thrills, it’s a nasty little ride.
