The Sure Thing (1985)

What makes The Sure Thing endure is how effortlessly it turns a familiar “opposites stuck together” setup into something genuinely charming, smart, and surprisingly tender, guided by Rob Reiner’s easy confidence and a young John Cusack at peak likability. The movie has a bright, road-trip bounce—witty banter, little detours of awkwardness and warmth, and just enough sincerity to make the laughs land and the feelings feel earned. It’s sweet without being saccharine, and it treats its characters like real people who can grow up a little between bus stations and bad decisions. If you’re allergic to ’80s college comedy flavor or a few dated gender beats, you may wince here and there, but if you want a refreshing rom-com with heart and timing, this one’s a delight.
