Summer Rental (1985)
Jack Chester, an overworked air traffic controller, takes his family on vacation to the beach. Things immediately start to go wrong for the Chesters, and steadily get worse. Jack ends up in a feud with a local yachtsman, and has to race him to regain his pride and family's respect.
What people think about Summer Rental
Summer Rental is the kind of easygoing, sun-drenched comedy that remembers vacations aren’t fun because they’re perfect, but because they go spectacularly wrong in ways you can laugh about later—and John Candy turns that misery into something warmly human. Carl Reiner keeps the vibe breezy and good-natured as one frazzled dad’s beach getaway becomes a string of small humiliations, a bruised-ego rivalry, and an unexpectedly satisfying chance to prove himself without ever turning mean-spirited. Candy’s genial charm makes you root for him even when he’s being ridiculous, and the supporting cast adds just enough salt and swagger to give the seaside setting some comic bite. If you’re looking for sharp-edged satire or big set-piece mayhem, this isn’t that; it’s a modest, comforting crowd-pleaser that goes down like a cold drink after a long day in the sun.
Summer Rental is aiming for a sunny, family-friendly “dad on vacation loses his dignity, then wins it back” comedy, with John Candy doing his best to turn everyday humiliation into something lovable. The problem is it often plays like a string of beach mishaps and sitcom bits rather than a story that builds, so the pacing can feel slack and the rivalry plot doesn’t always land with much bite. If you’re expecting Carl Reiner at his sharpest or a tightly written comedy with big payoffs, this may feel thin and oddly flat. But if you just want low-stakes ’80s comfort viewing, mild humor, and Candy’s inherently warm presence carrying scenes that aren’t especially clever, it can still be an easy, harmless watch.
