Smooth Talk (1985)

Smooth Talk is the rare coming-of-age drama that also plays like a slow, tightening vise, turning the everyday textures of teenage summer into something quietly terrifying. Laura Dern gives a haunting, clear-eyed performance as Connie, capturing that volatile mix of bravado, longing, and vulnerability with such precision you feel like you’re watching a real girl discover how quickly the world can change its rules. Joyce Chopra directs with an assured, intimate touch—family slights sting, flirtations feel electric, and when menace arrives it does so with a surreal calm that makes the tension almost unbearable. It’s not a crowd-pleasing thriller and it won’t comfort you, but if you want a smart, unsettling film that understands adolescence from the inside and never lets you off the hook, this one lingers.

Smooth Talk is clearly aiming for a grounded, painfully recognizable coming-of-age story that mutates into a tense psychological nightmare, and Joyce Chopra deserves credit for taking teenage vulnerability seriously. The catch is the movie can feel like two different films stitched together: the early mall-and-summer realism drifts along, then the thriller turn arrives so abruptly it may strike you as forced rather than inevitable. Some of the dialogue leans a bit on-the-nose and the escalation into near-mythic menace can read as melodramatic instead of organically scary, depending on your tolerance for allegory. Still, Laura Dern is excellent and Treat Williams is unsettling in a quiet, insinuating way—just don’t go in expecting a smooth genre blend or a conventional thriller payoff.
