Silverado (1985)
Four unwitting heroes cross paths on their journey to the sleepy town of Silverado. Little do they know the town where their family and friends reside has been taken over by a corrupt sheriff and a murderous posse. It's up to the sharp-shooting foursome to save the day, but first they have to break each other out of jail, and learn who their real friends are.
What people think about Silverado
Silverado is that rare modern Western that feels both lovingly classic and freshly alive: a big-sky adventure with the snap of a crowd-pleaser and the polish of first-rate filmmaking. Lawrence Kasdan stages the action with clear, muscular storytelling, letting the gunfights and jailbreaks crackle while the camaraderie between Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, and Danny Glover gives the movie its beating heart. The town itself becomes a vivid arena of crooked power and hard choices, photographed with a handsome, sunlit richness that makes you want to live in the frame even when trouble’s brewing. If you’re allergic to old-fashioned Western archetypes or frequent shootouts, it may not convert you—but if you want a smart, energetic ride that remembers why this genre endures, Silverado delivers.
Silverado is clearly trying to revive the classic, crowd-pleasing Western: big skies, bigger gunfights, and four mismatched heroes stumbling into a town run by rot and deciding to fix it. The problem is it can feel like a very polished greatest-hits album—busy, overstuffed, and a bit too comfortable with familiar character types and story beats to land much emotional weight. If you want a Western with sharp character depth, moral complexity, or a truly fresh dramatic hook, this may come off as loud spectacle with thin edges. But if you’re in the mood for a brisk, good-looking, star-powered ride with plenty of action and a straightforward sense of justice, it does that job well.
