Silver Bullet (1985)

Silver Bullet has that rare, cozy-small-town-meets-primal-nightmare flavor that makes ’80s horror so rewatchable: you can practically feel the porch lights clicking off as paranoia creeps in. It’s a lean, satisfying werewolf tale that builds dread through atmosphere and community suspicion, then pays it off with a crowd-pleasing, edge-of-your-seat finale. Gary Busey brings a scruffy, big-hearted spark as Uncle Red, and the sibling bond at the center gives the scares an emotional anchor instead of treating the characters like disposable victims. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s some nasty, old-school brutality—but if you want a spooky, straightforward creature feature with personality and momentum, this one still bites.

Silver Bullet is clearly aiming for a cozy Stephen King-style small-town scare story, mixing coming-of-age heart, a dash of humor, and a classic werewolf mystery. The problem is it often plays more like a made-for-TV thriller than a proper horror film: the pacing lumbers, the writing leans on obvious beats, and the tension rarely builds into real dread. The tone can feel awkwardly split between grim murders and campy moments, and the werewolf itself may test your ability to take the threat seriously. Still, Gary Busey brings some scrappy charm and the kid-sibling dynamic has a likable earnestness, so if you want a nostalgic 80s creature feature more than genuine scares, it might do the job—but if you’re here for sharp logic, tight suspense, or a truly frightening monster, this probably isn’t your night.
