Re-Animator (1985)

Jeffrey Combs is a cult-icon revelation as Herbert West—icy, intense, and weirdly funny—anchoring the film’s escalating insanity with a straight-faced conviction that makes every shock land harder. When it works, it’s because Jeffrey Combs plays Herbert West with razor-sharp intensity and the film commits hard to its gleefully unhinged B-movie energy. But if you want horror that feels grounded, tasteful, or even remotely restrained, this one is basically a firehose of gore and provocation, and the comedy can read as crude rather than clever depending on your tolerance. Also be aware it includes a notoriously nasty sexual-violence-adjacent sequence that many viewers find more upsetting than entertaining, so if that’s a dealbreaker, skip it without guilt.
