Billy Wong is a New York City cop whose partner is gunned down during a robbery. Billy and his new partner, Danny Garoni, are working security at a fashion show when a wealthy man's daughter, Laura Shapiro, is kidnapped. The Federal authorities suspect that Laura's father is involved with Mr. Ko, a Hong Kong drug kingpin, so the NYC police commissioner sends the two cops to Hong Kong to investigate.

Explained

What people think about The Protector

The Protector is special because it drops Jackie Chan into a hard-edged 80s cop-thriller world and lets the action do the talking—less wink-and-nudge comedy, more bruises, urgency, and momentum. It’s got that grimy neon-and-gunmetal vibe of street-level crime cinema, then kicks the scale up when the investigation heads to Hong Kong, where the set pieces get bigger and the stakes feel sharper. The stunts land with the kind of physical conviction that reminds you why Chan became a legend, and the film’s straightforward, no-nonsense tone makes it an underrated companion to the era’s toughest action programmers. If you’re expecting broad slapstick and playful choreography, this isn’t that movie—but if you want solid, gritty thrills with real-deal stuntwork, it’s an easy recommendation.
