Moving Violations (1985)

Moving Violations is the kind of scrappy ’80s comedy that wins you over with sheer momentum: a parade of hapless drivers, petty authority figures, and escalating chaos that turns something as dull as traffic school into a lively little arena for mischief. Neal Israel keeps the tone light and zany, letting the jokes come from personality clashes and comic incompetence rather than heavy plot mechanics, with John Murray’s easygoing charm and Jennifer Tilly’s spark adding extra bounce to the ensemble. It’s not a sophisticated satire and it won’t be for viewers allergic to broad, goofy humor, but if you’re in the mood for a “guilty pleasure” that delivers steady laughs and breezes by in 90 minutes, this one earns its keep. Expect mild sexual jokes and some punchy PG-13 language, all in service of a diverting, old-school comedy vibe.

Moving Violations is trying to be a breezy, rowdy traffic-school ensemble comedy in the Police Academy mold, complete with a corrupt authority figure and a ragtag class of screwups teaming up for payback. The problem is it rarely finds a fresh angle, leaning hard on predictable beats, stock characters, and slapstick car-smash gags that can feel more noisy than funny. If you need sharp writing, memorable characters, or laughs that build instead of just crashing into the next stunt, this will probably feel pretty inert.
