My Life as a Dog (1985)
A boy, obsessed with comparing himself with those less fortunate, experiences a different life at the home of his aunt and uncle in 1959 Sweden.
What people think about My Life as a Dog
What makes My Life as a Dog so special is how it captures childhood the way it actually feels: funny and bewildering one minute, quietly devastating the next, all without forcing a single emotion. Lasse Hallström sets the story in a sunlit 1950s Swedish town that seems gentle on the surface, then lets life’s harder truths seep in through small moments, oddball neighbors, and the ache of what a boy can’t quite name yet. Anton Glanzelius gives a wonderfully natural performance as Ingemar, whose habit of comparing his troubles to worse fates becomes both a coping mechanism and a window into a tender, resilient heart. It’s not a movie for people who want their drama tidy or their comedy broad, but if you’re open to a humane coming-of-age tale that earns its tears and its laughter, this one stays with you.
My Life as a Dog is aiming for that bittersweet coming-of-age sweet spot: a kid using humor, mischief, and oddball town characters to survive grief he can’t fully name yet. When it works, it’s quietly moving and warmly observed, with a natural child performance and a gentle sense of place that makes 1950s Sweden feel lived-in rather than “cute.” The catch is that a lot of it plays like familiar, low-stakes childhood-episode material, so if you want a sharper plot or bigger emotional crescendos, you may find it meanders before it lands. Also, despite the “comedy” label, the film doesn’t pull punches on death and loss (including the dog), so if that’s a sore spot, this is one to skip.
