The Midnight Hour (1985)

It’s not trying to be terrifying or sophisticated—more like a campfire story told with a wink and a beat you can dance to—and that’s exactly why it’s so easy to enjoy. If you like your scares gentle, your monsters colorful, and your Halloween vibes strong, this one’s a small cult delight worth resurrecting.

The Midnight Hour is clearly aiming for a breezy, Halloween-party monster mash where teens, small-town lore, and a dash of romance collide in a made-for-TV spooky romp. The problem is it’s more vibe than story: the plot leans hard on familiar clichés, the pacing lumbers when it should be zipping, and the effects look exactly like what they are—TV-budget creatures meant to be enjoyed with lowered standards. If you’re expecting real scares, sharp suspense, or tight writing, this will feel bland and a bit aimless, like it’s killing time until the midnight deadline. But if you can enjoy a cozy, campy 80s Halloween atmosphere with charming cast energy (LeVar Burton included) and don’t mind the rough edges, it can still make for a nostalgic seasonal watch.
