King David (1985)

King David is the kind of big-sky, big-ambition historical epic that swings for mythic grandeur, and even when it stumbles, it’s hard not to admire how earnestly it reaches for something larger than life. Bruce Beresford stages the famous rise-and-fall arc with a painterly sense of place, and Donald McAlpine’s cinematography gives the deserts, battlefields, and palace shadows a tactile, lived-in weight that makes the ancient world feel immediate. Richard Gere plays David with a surprisingly sincere, human pulse—less marble statue than complicated man—while Edward Woodward’s Saul adds a tremor of jealousy and tragedy that keeps the drama simmering. It’s not the tightest or most nuanced biblical adaptation, and the nudity and violence are part of its frank, adult tone, but if you want a sweeping, visually handsome take on a legendary life, this is a compelling watch.
