Fright Night (1985)

Fright Night is that rare horror-comedy that actually respects both halves of its DNA: it wants to make you laugh, sure, but it also wants you to glance nervously at the window after the credits. Tom Holland takes familiar vampire lore and gives it fresh, suburban bite, buoyed by a terrific cast—Chris Sarandon is all charm with a predator’s calm, and Roddy McDowall’s Peter Vincent brings a surprisingly heartfelt, showman’s bravado that turns the movie into more than a simple creature feature. The tone is brisk and wickedly witty, with practical effects and suspense that build to a satisfyingly spooky crescendo without drowning in cynicism. If you prefer your horror grim and humorless, this may feel a bit too playful, but if you want a crowd-pleaser with real fangs, it’s a minor classic for a reason.

Fright Night (1985) is clearly trying to mash up old-school vampire chills with a wink at horror fandom, and when it leans into that playful tone it can be a lot of fun. The catch is that it takes its time getting to the really good stuff, with a stretch of setup and “why won’t anyone believe me?” repetition that can feel slower than you’d hope. If you want tight pacing, clever plotting, or nonstop scares, this may test your patience—but if you’re happy to soak in ‘80s atmosphere, practical effects, and a charmingly sleazy villain performance, it pays off more once the movie finally commits to the mayhem. Think of it as a cozy, slightly uneven crowd-pleaser rather than a razor-sharp horror-comedy classic.
