Fletch (1985)

Fletch is the rare comedy-mystery that actually treats the mystery like it matters, then punctures it with a steady stream of razor-dry one-liners and inspired absurdity. Chevy Chase turns investigative reporting into a high-wire act of disguises and improvisation, gliding through Los Angeles with the confidence of a man who can talk his way out of anything—and the film keeps pace with him, brisk and breezy without feeling flimsy. Michael Ritchie’s direction keeps the vibe light and sunlit even as the story coils into corruption and deception, making the twists feel like part of the fun rather than homework. If you don’t click with Chase’s smug, rapid-fire persona it won’t convert you, but if you do, this is a smart, quotable crowd-pleaser that still knows how to surprise.

Fletch is trying to be a breezy, wisecracking detective story where the mystery is really just a runway for Chevy Chase to riff, disguise-hop, and talk his way out of trouble. If you like Chase’s smug, improvisational persona, you’ll probably have fun; if you don’t, the movie quickly becomes an endurance test of familiar mannerisms masquerading as character. The plot has an intriguing hook, but it meanders and can feel structurally loose, with a tone that sometimes comes off more self-satisfied than clever. Still, there are enough snappy moments and a light noir vibe to make it a decent pick for fans of ’80s comedies who don’t need their mysteries tightly engineered.
