What people think about F/X
F/X is one of those deliciously clever thrillers where the movie’s gimmick isn’t a gimmick at all—it’s the engine, and it keeps firing on every cylinder. By making a special-effects wizard the hero, the film turns smoke, mirrors, and misdirection into a kind of street-level superpower, and director Robert Mandel stages the cat-and-mouse games with crisp momentum and a confident, neo-noir edge. Bryan Brown is effortlessly watchable as the guy who can fake anything except his way out of trouble, while Brian Dennehy brings a rumpled, human heft that grounds the twists in something you can believe. It’s not a meditative character study and it does include some adult content and brisk violence, but if you want a smart, tightly paced 80s action-thriller that constantly outthinks the room, this is a terrific night at the movies.
F/X is trying to be a slick, high-concept ’80s thriller where movie-magic tricks become real-world survival tools, and when it’s focused on the mechanics of the cons, it’s genuinely fun. The problem is it asks you to swallow a lot of implausible turns and convenient timing, with dialogue that can veer into cheesy and a plot that often plays like a familiar conspiracy template. Pacing also wobbles between clever set pieces and stretches that feel like they’re just moving pieces into place. If you enjoy old-school cat-and-mouse thrillers and can forgive logic gaps for the sake of inventive gimmicks (plus a solid, gruff Brian Dennehy presence), it’s a decent time; if you need tight realism and sharp writing, this will test your patience.
