The Doctor and the Devils (1985)

The Doctor and the Devils is the kind of Victorian horror that feels handsomely crafted and morally unsettling in the best way, less about cheap shocks than the chill of watching respectable institutions rot from the inside. Freddie Francis directs with a sly taste and wit, letting foggy streets, candlelit lecture halls, and cramped backrooms do as much storytelling as the dialogue, while Timothy Dalton and Jonathan Pryce bring a dangerous intelligence to a world where ambition and desperation feed each other. The film’s pleasures are in its period atmosphere and the way it turns history into a grim parable about “progress” at any cost, keeping you hooked with dread rather than jump scares. It is, however, bluntly adult—violent, occasionally gory, and steeped in vice—so if you want a cozy gothic yarn, this one plays colder and sharper, but if you like your horror intelligent and haunted by real human choices, it’s a bracing watch.

The problem is that it often feels like it’s going through the motions: the pacing is sluggish, the tension rarely builds, and the supposedly shocking material lands with a strangely muted, watered-down punch. Timothy Dalton and Jonathan Pryce bring some credibility, and the setting has a suitably dank atmosphere, but the film can come off more dreary than genuinely unsettling. If you’re expecting punchy Gothic horror or a gripping true-crime-style descent, this may test your patience; it’s better suited to viewers who enjoy slow, talky period chillers and don’t mind the drama feeling a bit inert.
