American Ninja (1985)

American Ninja is the kind of lean, scrappy 1980s action movie that understands its mission: get you to the next great fight, then make that fight count. Sam Firstenberg stages the set pieces with a punchy clarity that lets you actually see the choreography land, and Michael Dudikoff’s cool, almost blank-slate hero vibe becomes a feature as the film builds a steady rhythm of ambushes, showdowns, and ninja mayhem. The tone is pure VHS-era crowd-pleaser—sun-baked military pulp, clean momentum, and just enough buddy energy from Steve James to keep it fun between bouts of flying kicks and thrown steel. If you need deep character drama or realism, look elsewhere, but if you want a brisk, satisfyingly staged martial-arts romp that never forgets why you pressed play, this one delivers.
