The problem is that it often feels like Proust filtered through a prestige costume-drama lens, where the emotions are presented rather than quietly excavated, so the psychological nuance can come off flatter than the story demands. If you’re coming for the novel’s interiority, moral ambiguity, and slow-burn introspection, you may find this adaptation too direct and a bit emotionally obvious. But if you want a visually refined, melancholy romance about self-deception and social illusion—and you don’t mind that it simplifies the deeper currents—it’s a respectable, if not penetrating, watch.
