Tank (1984)

Tank is the kind of unapologetically crowd-pleasing 1980s romp that knows exactly what it is: a small-town rebellion fantasy powered by a very real Sherman tank and the easy, grounded charisma of James Garner. It’s got that cheesy, good-ol’-boy energy where the villains are broad, the momentum is constant, and the satisfaction comes from watching a decent man finally refuse to be pushed around by corrupt authority. Marvin J. Chomsky keeps the tone lively and populist, mixing laughs with enough rough edges and bruises to make the stakes feel more than cartoonish. If you’re allergic to shameless wish-fulfillment or prefer subtle satire, it may be too on-the-nose—but if you want an entertaining, engine-revving underdog tale with Garner steering the whole thing, it’s a surprisingly fun ride.

Tank is trying to be a crowd-pleasing, small-town vengeance romp where a decent man with a literal war machine stands up to corrupt lawmen, and on paper that’s a fun, simple hook. The problem is it can’t decide if it wants to be a goofy comedy or a serious abuse-of-power drama, so the tone swings hard and the “tank solves everything” payoff can feel more silly than satisfying. If you’re hoping for sharp satire, believable tension, or much depth beyond the setup, you’ll probably find it thin and a bit crude. That said, James Garner’s grounded likability and the sheer novelty of a Sherman tank tearing through roadblocks can still make it an easy watch if you’re in the mood for old-school, logic-light revenge entertainment.
