Supergirl (1984)

Supergirl is special because it treats its heroine with sincere, bright-eyed optimism—Helen Slater arrives with a winning mix of strength and sweetness that makes you want to root for her even when the movie gets cheerfully weird. Jeannot Szwarc leans into a storybook, Saturday-matinee vibe where space fantasy collides with witchy mischief, and Faye Dunaway has a delicious time turning villainy into high camp without smothering the film’s earnest heart. Jerry Goldsmith’s soaring score does a lot of heavy lifting, giving the flying, sparkling visuals a sense of grandeur that’s easy to fall into if you meet it halfway. It’s not for viewers hunting modern superhero grit or tight logic, but if you’re in the mood for imaginative, daft fun with a genuinely likable Supergirl at the center, it’s a charming time capsule worth a watch.

Supergirl (1984) is clearly aiming for a bright, kid-friendly superhero fairy tale—part Krypton lore, part witches-and-wizardry adventure—and you can feel the studio hoping it would capture the easy charm of the earlier Superman films. The problem is it’s messy and oddly sluggish: the plot wanders, the rules change when convenient, and the action and effects now look more like a TV episode stretched to feature length than a proper big-screen event. Helen Slater has an earnest, likable presence and Faye Dunaway at least commits to the camp, but the character work is thin enough that even the fun villainy can’t carry the pacing. If you’re hunting for a solid superhero movie or coherent sci-fi fantasy, this will test your patience; if you enjoy ‘80s cheese, nostalgic curiosities, and unintentional camp, you might get a guilty kick out of it.
